You want to record one app — not your messy desktop, not the Slack ping that pops mid-demo, not the tab full of tabs. Recording your whole screen and hoping nothing embarrassing shows up is a gamble. Here's how to capture exactly one window, one browser tab, or just a slice of your screen, with nothing to install.
Capture only what you mean to show
The fastest way to look unprofessional in a screen recording is to catch something you didn't want on camera — a personal notification, another client's name in a tab, the file called final_FINAL_v3 on your desktop. Recording a specific window or tab fixes that at the source: everything else simply isn't in the frame.

What you need
- A recent Chrome, Edge or other Chromium browser (best support for window and tab capture)
- The window or tab you want to record, already open
- A microphone if you'll be narrating
Step 1 — Start on the record page
Open the record page and set your mic (and camera, if you want a webcam bubble in the corner). Then start the capture — the browser takes over for the next choice.
Step 2 — Choose your target in the picker
The browser's share dialog opens with three tabs:
- Entire Screen — everything, good for multi-app workflows
- Window — one application window; click away and it still records only that app
- Chrome Tab — a single browser tab, the cleanest option for web demos
Pick Window to record just your slide deck or your code editor. Pick Tab to record one web app and leave the rest of your browser out of it. This is a browser permission, so you're always in control of exactly what's shared.
Step 3 — Record
Hit record and walk through it. Because you scoped the capture to one window or tab, you can alt-tab to your notes, check a message, or grab a file — none of it lands in the video. The timer counts up so you can pace the 5-minute Free limit, and your narration is transcribed live for later.
Step 4 — Crop to a region in the editor
Need to show only part of what you captured — say a single panel of a dashboard? Send the recording to the editor and use Crop to reframe to exactly that region, zooming it up to fill the frame. Use a fixed aspect ratio for a clean result, or hit Fit to Project to snap the crop to your output size. Want to draw attention to one spot without cropping the whole clip? Add a keyframed zoom and pan instead.
Step 5 — Finish
Trim the ends, then download the file or publish to YouTube straight from the editor. The footage was composited on your device the whole time, so it never sat on a server unless you chose to upload it.
How it compares

Can I record just one window and hide everything else?

How do I record only part of my screen?
